New Booklet Reports on the Harmful Effect of Indoor Sunlight and How to Prevent It

Washington, D.C. – October 16, 2013 –As the popularity of large windows increases, the nonprofit International Window Film Association (IWFA) is expanding its public awareness program to include a free consumer-friendly booklet illustrating the unhealthy impact of indoor sunlight on the skin and the steps to take to prevent it.

According to The New England Journal of Medicine and Clinical Interventions In Aging, there is evidence that office workers, commuters and residents who are regularly exposed to indoor sunlight face health concerns, such as skin cancer, from the cumulative effects of indoor sun exposure.

“As we spend more time indoors and in cars exposed to natural sunshine, we open ourselves up to skin damage,” said Darrell Smith, executive director of the IWFA. “Consumers should know that professionally installed window film can block nearly all of the harmful rays from the sun, and once installed, it can immediately protect us indoors, while still allowing abundant natural light.”

Few people realize the sun’s deeply penetrating UVA rays pass freely through unprotected windows and onto the next surface, whether it’s furniture, a floor or skin. UVA rays that pass through unprotected glass are not felt like UVB rays, which cause sunburn outdoors. UVA rays account for up to 95% of the UV radiation reaching the earth’s surface.

To protect skin indoors, professionally installed window film can block up to 99% of harmful UV rays and reduce solar heat gain to save consumers up to 30% on energy costs.
