International Window Film Association Continues Push to Educate on The Benefits of Safety and Security Films
Washington, D.C. – June 23, 2025 – In the recent months, the International Window Film Association (IWFA) and its members have been heavily involved in the education of Safety and Security products. With its commitment to keeping the public and industry informed, the IWFA has approached the issue from several different directions.
Earlier this month, both IWFA Technical Consultant Lisa Winckler and IWFA Board Member Jonathan Thompson appeared for a panel discussion at the AIA Convention in Boston, Massachusetts to discuss the “mysteries” of Safety and Security films in Architecture. The panel reviewed current legislation, misconceptions, and what films can and cannot do. The talk also focused on the different types of testing, such as bomb blast, impact, and fire safety.
Coinciding with the AIA Convention, Vinnie Driscoll of Window Film Magazine published an article titled “Delay is the Defense” detailing and reaffirming the capabilities of Safety Films. IWFA Board Member Lawrence Constantin, Lisa Winckler, and IWFA Executive Director Darrell Smith all contributed to the article from perspectives including marketing, technical, and misleading information. The article focused on thinking of film not as a standalone method of protection, but to utilize security film and other measures as part of a multilayered security plan.
The IWFA continues to work with the National Glass Association, participating on a Panel discussion on school safety at the NGA meeting in Carlsbad, CA and presenting alongside NGA Code Consultant Thom Zaremba on an NGA Webinar on the same subject.
IWFA members are also involved in the working group drafting a new proposed ASTM standard aimed at glazing retrofit solutions. The working group is in response to a request for a standard similar to the existing ASTM F 356, Standard Test Method for Forced-Entry-Resistance of Fenestration Systems After Simulated Active Shooter Attack, which is applicable only to complete window or door systems and includes locking mechanisms where applicable. The ASTM consensus process requires stakeholders from all areas of interest to comment and approve any new standard.
The IWFA Is committed to keeping its members and the pubic as informed as they can be when it comes to Safety Films and their uses.
